On his initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” New York City, ushering in “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The young figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my ideals for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering basic services: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
